History and evolution of Chitpur Local
Chitpur Local is an ongoing engagement with the neighbourhood around Chitpur Road, Kolkata, that has explored the role of artists in the public domain, especially in activating local cultural spaces through collaborations with people from the area. It was initiated in 2014 by four artists who were drawn to the neighbourhood’s history of popular cultural practices like printing, publishing, jatra (vernacular theatre), street art, etc., and the possibilities of re-appropriating these traditions and reintroducing art-making as a part of people’s everyday lives.
After three years, and several iterations of collaborative projects which brought together various members of the community, generated a dialogue about its diverse traditions, built new interactions, planted the seeds of new projects and products, and activated community spaces; we are now ready to begin the second edition of this process.
About the Second Edition
Starting in January 2017, we will deepen our engagement within the same geography, and expand the scope of our work by bringing in new artistic perspectives and engaging with new contexts. Over the next year, our team expands to 8, and, as we continue to test and redefine our role as artists in the spaces of cultural production in the locality, we also begin to enter different political, social and economic contexts. Adding to the community members at local bookshops, studios, art centres and schools who wish to continue to work with us, we have opened up possibilities for collaborative, participatory projects in local para clubs, police stations, homes and other spaces. These diverse contexts present new areas of exploration, within our recurring theme of challenging, testing, and reflecting upon the role of artists in the public domain.
